If you simply read the word "Saiyan" without ever knowing of Dragon Ball... you _should_ read it as "Sigh-an".

Kai = Kay?
Bai = Bay?
Tai = Tay?

Geez does sigh-yan really sound better to you guys? It just feels so weird coming out

I have a question..."saiyan", regardless of how it's pronounced, is not even said
outside of the funimation dub is it? Japanese say "saiya-jin". It's not even the same word. So is it fair to say "say-en" is totally wrong? Because just looking at "saiyan" I would think most people would pronounce it "say-en".
In the current spanish dub we also say "sigh-yan".

In the manga we probably pronounce it the same way, but it's written with an -o at the end there.

Why should I pronounce an English original word the same way a Japanese original word is pronounced?

Well...it's still originally an English word

...What about Saiyajin? Both words that form that one word are japanese, not english. Saiyan is just a short version for it, shouldn't it be pronounced similarly?

Piccolo: Just how many people have you sacrificed?!

Cell: Sacrifice? Hmph, rubbish! On the contrary, it is an honor to become a fraction of my power.

If I want to say "Say-yan", I'm gonna say "Say-yan". What a nerve you have to call a certain way to say a word the "right way".

I just say "say-yan" because that's how I've always heard it. Obviously "sigh-yan" is the right way, and "sigh-uh-jen" is the even more correct way, but I hardly ever say it, so it's not like it matters much to me.

Aid, Raisin, Paint, Waist. I'd say that for English speakers, Say-an is more natural.

However, if 'Saiyan' is pronounced the Japanese way (which if it's a Japanese word, it probably should be), then it should be pronounced 'Sigh-yan'. But similar to Pokemon (which should be pronounced Poh-keh-mon), it sounds weird to pronounce it a different way, even if that is the correct way, so I'll always just say it the way I've always said it.

I like the idea that Saiyans with different dialects would pronounce it differently. Anyone else?

No.

Why would Saiyans have differently dialects?

Well I don't know, I would figure since Saiyans are shipped all over the galaxy as babies and just on missions to go to other parts of the Galaxy, I figured at some point they might pick something up. f*** me for thinking at somepoint their pronunciations change lol.

But why would they change the pronunciation of a word that is obviously supposed to be pronounced "sigh-yan?"

lol

It takes a mere second for treasure to turn to trash.

I go pretty weeb when it comes to Dragonball, but, even I pronounce it "say-yin". I can't really get myself to say it like "cyan" or "cya-jihn"

There are plenty of cases in our own world of english words that change pronunciation the further you get. Look at the differences in pronunciation of the same words from both Americans and Australians. It's not impossible that being entire solar systems away wouldn't change pronunciation just a tad.
